Abstract:

The collection contains an original letter from and a photocopy of a memorial service for Egon Frey, a cousin; and programs, including one for a piano concert given by Hephzibah Menuhin (1928) and two for the Distribution of Annual Awards and an Entertainment by the Children given by the Pacific Hebrew Orphan Asylum and Home Society (February 25, 1934; March 3, 1935). The collection also has materials about Washington Bartlett (1824-1887), a printer from Georgia who arrived in San Francisco in 1849 and became the city's mayor, and, later, the governor of California. These include Frey's research notes about Bartlett and early California history; a copy of the May 1962 issue of Pacific Historical Review, which contains H. Brett Melendy's article, California's Washington Bartletts; and a copy of a Memorial of the Life and Services of Washington Bartlett (Late Governor of California), Adopted by the Society of California Pioneers at a Regular Meeting, Held Monday, May 7, 1888. The collection also has copies of various published essays and speechs: Horace Stern's Louis Marshall: An Appreciation (February 1930); Justin G. Turner's A Note on Solomon Nunes Carvalho and his Portrait of Abraham Lincoln (printed in Los Angeles by The Plantin Press, 1960); Placed as a Link in this Chain: A Medley of Observations by Ernst Toch (published by the Friends of the UCLA Library, University of California, Los Angeles, 1971); a copy of remarks given at the Inauguration of Alfred Gottschalk as the fifth President of Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion, in Cincinnati (February 24, 1972); and a copy of A Jubilee of the Spirit, an address given by Gottschalk on the fiftieth anniversary of the founding of the Jewish Institute of Religion (May 31, 1972).
